The YOTC International Science Symposium &8th AMY Workshop has been opened in Beijing today.

Dr Xu Xiaofeng, Deputy Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Chairman of the THORPEX-China Committee attended the opening ceremony and made a speech. Mr. Wu Guoxiong, WCRP, AMY, Co-chair of the science Committee, Mr. Mitch Moncrieff, YOTC, Co-chair of the Science Committee, and Mr. Jim Caughey, THORPEX International Project Office, WMO were presented at the opening ceremony.

At the opening ceremony, Xu Xiaofeng says that CMA has always been part of the Observing-system Research and Research and Predictability Experiment (THORPEX) programmes and rendered its due contribution to its implementation. He calls on all the participants and stakeholders to actively participate in and contribute to the Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC) and the Asian Monsoon Years (AMY) programmes and activities.

It is reported that, to address the challenge of tropical convection, the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP/THORPEX) propose YOTC, a joint research activity consisting of a focus period approach along with a an integrated research framework tailored to exploit the vast amounts of existing observations, expanding computational resources and the development of new, high-resolution modeling frameworks.

The AMY is a cross-cutting initiative as part of the International Monsoon Study (IMS), a coordinated observation and modeling effort under the leadership of WCRP. The long term goal is to improve Asian monsoon prediction for societal benefits through coordinated efforts to improve our understanding of Asian monsoon variability and predictability.

The workshop will last from May 16 to 19. Almost 30 invited speakers from the world will give speeches about their researching work in this area. (May 16)
