The opening ceremony of the International Training Course on Agriculture Meteorology was held in Room 510 of CMATC Integrated Lecture Building on October 19, 2010.

The southwest of China was struck with the severe drought at the beginning of 2010, and flood hit eleven provinces in the south of China in June, 2010. Under such circumstances, the importance of the International Training Course on Agriculture Meteorology was even more obvious because the focus of the course was the impact of climate change on agriculture productions. Mr. Jacob Lomas from Israel Meteorological Administration was invited by CMATC to introduce the experiences and techniques of drip irrigation, water shortage, etc. Mr. Lomas has come to China many times. For this course focused on climate change, he prepared quite a lot of case studies of local experiences in Israel. CMATC also invited Mr. Mei Xurong and Mr. Lin Erda, two renowned experts from Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences to give lectures for the course.

Six international participants working in the field of agriculture meteorology attended the training course. They were from four African countries: South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia and Rwanda. In addition, 25 Chinese participants from different provinces also joined the course.

The International Training Course on Agriculture Meteorology is funded by the Voluntary Cooperation Programme (VCP) of China Meteorological Administration. As one of the regional training centres of WMO, CMATC has held a diversity of international training courses and has consistently received positive responses from WMO. Three international participants of the course were aided with international travel expenses from WMO, which showed the determination of WMO to help the African people in the field of agricultural meteorology, and which also indicated the recognition and the attention from WMO for the training course.

Let us wish the International Training Course on Agriculture Meteorology a big success!
